Welcome to Funkum.studio!

Ever get the feeling you've been cheated?

When Johnny Lydon said these words he was not referring to the shape shift between creator and product that we are exposed to on social media. He was also not referring to the mind numbing noise of microblogging sites or the flood of frames and the dictatorship of thumbnails. But he might as well could have.

Why did we call this site Funkum? It is a word from a George Orwell novel "Down and out in Paris and London". It is a tramp slang term used by folks living on the streets in the 1930s and making a penny with lavender or cheap perfume sold in small envelopes. Also it sounds a bit like "F*ck'em" in a weird dialect when spoken quickly, which can't be bad either.

So with all that being said, we don't want to be cheated and we don't want you to feel cheated either. This is why we put together a service that allows us to share our music with other musicians, friends and family. The reason why we make music is because we feel we have to, its amongst other things the essence of what makes us human. We all like to make a dime, but the real reason why we do this is because we cannot not do it. If we have an audience that is a plus but its not the reason why we do it in the first place. Its like banging on a stone with a bone and loving it. Pretty primal.

The way we do this is to sell you space where you can put your stuff and where you can control how to share it. We don't do ads, we don't loose sleep over how many people visit us. We do this for folks like you, given the fact that you came this far along in this intro. We are glad to have you with us. Now to some more utilitarian topics.

How it works

Users can upload assets, which can be anything from audio files, videos, images, config files or package/archives/zip files. Assets can be shared with other Funkum users directly and with everyone else via a sharing link. There is no time limit to how long your files are available to be shared. We don't snoop into your files and don't sell ads. Those are your files and its up to you who can access them. It goes without saying that using Funkum on multiple computers and cell phones is convenient, since you can easily log in and have your files available on multiple machines across Mac, Windows, Linux, IOS and Android even if those machines don't belong to the same user. Sharing between collaborators is a breeze with Funkum.

You can create releases which contain any of your assets. You can simply add the files or you can also add a post with context about these assets, like where you recorded them or which microphones or audio gear you used. Everyone can see your releases and stream your audio and give you feedback on what they like about it. Multiple releases are organized in collections. You can decide if you create a release under your artist name or as a band or project together with other Funkum users. You can also use a split sheet to track copyright and authorship in a transparent way for all co-authors.

Glad to have you with us,
Gerhard
